French Instructor
Steve
Looking to learn or improve your French for school, fun, or travel? Steve holds a master’s
degree in French and francophone literature from the University of North Carolina, Greensboro. He has taught French at UNCG and Forsyth Technical Community College.
Children learn their first language successfully by receiving meaningful input adapted to their
level, in a context that is full of challenges, yet fun and free from humiliation. Steve’s goal is to try to recreate for adults and young adults this kind of learning context that uses the second
language as the primary means of instruction. As we learn, we make lots of mistakes with
language, and that is natural. So he always strives to foster a learning atmosphere that is fun,
supportive, and shame-free, yet also challenging.
Steve received a B.A. in English from Princeton University and an M.Div. from Princeton
Theological Seminary, with a concentration in New Testament Greek. After 25 years in pastoral
ministry, he retired early to pursue his lifelong love of writing and Romance languages. His
interests and research include teaching French and francophone culture through film,
particularly in the areas of immigration, racism and justice. The author of plays, books, and
articles, he currently resides in Winston Salem, NC.
