TedTalk Topics are designed to give English learners an introduction to the cultural landscape of contemporary America. In each one-on-one e-meeting, we will explore an issue that has become culturally significant enough to merit a TedTalk. The student will watch the TedTalk beforehand and e-meet with the instructor via Skype ready to learn about the issue on a deeper level. Jacqlyn Phillips has taught dozens of TedTalks in countries around the world. Her aim with this course is to answer a question she commonly hears: what do individual Americans think about this? Topics such as race relations, immigration, privacy, gun violence and terrorism will be taken from their sensational headlines and returned to their day-to-day American context. We’ll discuss the topic from several angles, while also focusing on any new words, phrases or concepts that might be unfamiliar to a non-native English speaker. This course is for anyone who wants to learn more about contemporary America or anyone hoping to engage Americans in conversations concerning current events.
